The benefits of independent midwifery and the importance of continuity of care

The brilliant Sarah Fitzsimmons of My Independent Midwife shares her views on the benefits of independent midwifery.

I’m so pleased to share this episode with Sarah, founder of My Independent Midwife, a service she built alongside her long-time colleague Jenny.

A qualified midwife since 2008, Sarah has always been passionate about a continuity of care model, supporting families throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. Her early career in private midwifery and later experience as a birth centre manager have given her a unique perspective on both independent and NHS maternity care.

What We Cover in This Episode:

  • What independent midwifery care looks like in practice

  • The benefits of continuity of carer during pregnancy and birth

  • Key differences between private midwives and NHS maternity care

  • Common misconceptions about independent midwifery

  • How midwives and doulas can work together to support positive birth experiences

For many families, understanding their options within the maternity system can feel overwhelming. This episode offers a clear, balanced look at how independent midwives can provide personalised, consistent care—and why that can make such a difference to your experience.
