Home Birth Panels - Conditional Compliance?
One of the biggest failings of the maternity system to date.
Birth panels are becoming an increasingly common part of maternity care across the UK - including within my local NHS trusts - and they’re often presented as a way to support “safe,” personalised decision-making around birth, especially when it comes to home birth choices.
On the surface, this sounds reassuring: a group of professionals reviewing your individual circumstances to help guide your care.
But for many women planning a home birth in the UK, the reality can feel very different.
Instead of genuine collaboration, these panels can become spaces where birth choices are questioned, redirected, or quietly limited—with language framed around safety, but experienced as pressure or even coercion.
In this episode, I explore:
What “safety” really means in maternity care
How home birth decisions can be influenced by policy rather than individual need
The subtle ways confidence can be undermined during pregnancy
And the important question: who is this system truly keeping safe?
I also talk through your rights in childbirth, including your right to choose where and how you give birth, and share practical steps you can take to feel more informed, confident, and supported - whether you’re planning a home birth, hospital birth, or something in between.

If you’ve found this episode I would love to know. Birth power is found in being informed, respected, and able to make decisions about your own body and your own birth.
