Why birth advocacy is so vital for a powerful experience

Today, we're diving into a topic that is very close to my heart: birth advocacy.

Birth advocacy is a topic that can stir strong emotions - but it’s also one of the most important conversations we can have when preparing for birth.

In this episode, we explore what birth advocacy really means, why it matters, and how you can begin advocating for yourself within the maternity system. You’ll come away with practical, actionable ways to feel more informed, confident, and in control of your care.

What Is Birth Advocacy?

At its core, birth advocacy is about understanding your options, knowing your rights, and making informed decisions that align with your values.

Modern maternity care is complex. It’s designed to support large numbers of people, which often means care is standardised into pathways and protocols. While this system supports many, it can sometimes leave individuals feeling unheard or disconnected from their choices.

At the same time, we can’t ignore that some families experience birth trauma, and that access to clear, evidence-based information plays a crucial role in improving experiences.

What you can expect from the episode:

  • Why birth advocacy is essential in today’s maternity system

  • How to navigate standardised care pathways with confidence

  • The role of informed consent and shared decision-making

  • Why education is empowering—not fear-inducing

  • Five simple ways to start advocating for yourself during pregnancy

This conversation isn’t about blaming individuals or criticising healthcare professionals.

Instead, this episode focuses on bridging the gap between system-led care and individual choice. As a doula, my role is to provide education and information so you can approach your birth feeling prepared, supported, and able to make decisions that are right for you.
