The Power of Doing Very Little
Reflections on trust, on power and of feminine flow from a recent birth.
It’s early in the morning. The house is quiet – the kind of quiet that wraps around you before the day really begins. I can hear my children breathing heavily next door, still fast asleep. My phone lights up with a WhatsApp message.
“Think my waters went last night. No significant cramping yet”
It’s from a wonderful woman I’m supporting – someone I’ve come to know and deeply admire. Her partner works away, so she’s facing the start of labour alone. Not something she’s fearful of – quite the opposite. She’s calm, tuned in, and leaning into rest. I offer to come, but she reassures me: she’s happy. She’s trusting her body.
And so we stay in touch, little check-ins throughout the day. Her husband arrives late afternoon and still – she’s good. No drama. No rush. Just presence.
Hours pass. Myself and another amazing birth worker in her circle keep messaging each other – have you heard anything yet? It feels strange to not be called in, to be holding space from afar. But that’s what we’re doing – quietly, intentionally. Waiting for the moment the energy shifts.
And then it comes, later that evening.
“She’d like you to come now please.”
We arrive and not long after, she climbs into the pool. The room is dark, warm. The fire is flickering in the corner of the room. Their music floats on the surface of the room. The surges are stronger now – lapping over her body in rising waves. She meets them with quiet strength. Then, we see it. The baby’s head. Four pushes later – arms open, babe in arms, the room awash in awe. The tears flowing from everyone’s eyes.
She did it.
And not just had the baby – she birthed. On her own terms. In her own power. With her own inner knowing guiding her.
A chance for reflection
This birth reminded me, again, of something I so often forget to reflect on: the power of doing very little.
Society’s obsessed with the doing. The action. The tick-boxes. And I get it – I’m often asked in sessions: “But what do you actually DO as a doula?”
The truth? Often, it’s everything that happens before the birth that shapes it.
It’s the deep trust cultivated over weeks.
The quiet confidence built between woman and body.
The preparation, the safety, the knowing that when the moment came – she wouldn’t need me to take over. Just to be there.
By birthing in the way that felt most right for her – mostly alone, until the moment she wanted company – she embodied the transformation doulas are here to support. Not to manage or direct. But to walk alongside.
And the ripple effect?
It doesn’t stop at birth.
The end result isn’t just a fully embodied birth – it’s a postpartum period full of flow and trust. Of leaning in. Of embracing all the dimensions that come with those wild, tender newborn days. She landed in motherhood the same way she landed into birth: guided by instinct, supported by love, and grounded in her own power.
And while this work is never about me, births like this are always a quiet nudge – a reminder that my value isn’t in the doing. It’s in the being. It’s in the gentle text that says “I’m here if you need.” It’s the calm, steady absence that whispers: If my doula isn’t pressuring me to come, she must really believe I can do this.
It’s not about making it to the end without your doula as some kind of power move – it’s about knowing what you need, and having the trust and freedom to follow that knowing.
For this woman, that looked like calling us in for the final stretch. Not out of need. Out of desire. For kind, loving hands to hold her in that beautiful transition.
For others, it looks like me arriving much earlier. And that’s the beauty of this work – it’s adaptive, responsive. Feminine flow at its finest.
It’s not about control.
It’s about support that bends and breathes with you.
And when it’s done right – it becomes something you carry with you long after the birth itself.
